🏕️ Boy Scout Ranks
Scout Rank
The Scout rank is the first step in Boy Scouts.
To complete it, a new Scout must:
-
Complete a Boy Scout application and join a troop.
-
Repeat the Pledge of Allegiance.
-
Demonstrate the Scout sign, salute, and handshake.
-
Tie a square knot.
-
Describe the parts of the Scout badge.
-
Understand and agree to live by the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Slogan, and Outdoor Code.
Tenderfoot Rank
Tenderfoot is the second rank of Boy Scouts.
Scouts can work on requirements for any rank at any time, but they must earn ranks in order:
Scout → Tenderfoot → Second Class → First Class → Star → Life → Eagle.
To earn Tenderfoot, a Scout must complete requirements involving:

Camping and hiking

The American flag
-
The Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan

The patrol method and buddy system
-
Physical fitness
-
Basic plant knowledge
-
First aid skills
Second Class Rank
Second Class is the third rank.
Requirements cover:

Orienteering and map skills
-
Camping and use of wood tools
-
Cooking
-
Flag ceremonies
-
A service project
-
Wildlife knowledge
-
First aid
-
Swimming safety
-
Drug and alcohol prevention
-
Personal safety awareness
First Class Rank
First Class is the fourth rank.
To achieve it, a Scout must complete requirements including:

Orienteering and navigation

Advanced camping and cooking
-
Constitutional rights education
-
Plant identification
-
Knot-tying and lashings
-
Swimming and water safety
-
Recruitment of new Scouts
-
Safe Internet use
Star Rank
Star is the fifth rank and marks a shift toward leadership and service.
To earn Star, a Scout must:

Be active in their troop and patrol for at least 4 months after earning First Class.
-
Earn 6 merit badges, including 4 required for Eagle.
-
Complete at least 6 hours of service projects.
-
Serve in a leadership position for 4 months.
Life Rank
Life is the sixth rank of Boy Scouts.
To earn Life, a Scout must:

Be active in their troop and patrol for at least 6 months after earning Star.
-
Earn 5 more merit badges (totaling 11), including 3 more Eagle-required badges.
-
Complete at least 6 hours of service projects.
-
Serve in a leadership role for 6 months.
Eagle Scout Rank
The Eagle Scout rank is the highest honor in Scouting.
To earn Eagle, a Scout must:

Be active in the troop for at least 6 months after Life rank.

Earn a total of 21 merit badges, including 14 required badges:

First Aid
-
Citizenship in the Community, Nation, World, and Society

Communication
-
Cooking
-
Personal Fitness
-
Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving

Environmental Science or Sustainability
-
Personal Management
-
Swimming or Hiking or Cycling

Camping

Family Life
-

Serve in a leadership position for 6 months.

Complete a major Eagle Scout service project benefiting a religious institution, school, or community.
Eagle Palms
Eagle Palms are awarded to Eagle Scouts who continue their involvement and achievement after earning Eagle.
To earn Palms, an Eagle Scout must:

Remain active for at least 3 months after becoming an Eagle or earning the last Palm.

Demonstrate Scout Spirit and leadership ability.
-
Earn 5 additional merit badges for each Palm.
Palm Levels:
-
Bronze Palm: 5 additional merit badges
-
Gold Palm: 10 additional merit badges
-
Silver Palm: 15 additional merit badges
Palms must be earned in order, and only the correct combinations should be worn to show total merit badges earned beyond Eagle requirements.
